Search report: what customers cannot find

Read what customers search for in the store and fix searches without results with a redirect, a synonym or a catalog addition.

The search report shows what customers search for in your store and what they do not find. Searches without results are lost sales, which makes this one of the most useful reports.

Before you start

  • Record searches is switched on in the settings (Tracking); otherwise the report shows only what was recorded before,
  • the store has been running with search switched on for a while so data can accumulate.

1. Open the report

Marketing › SEO & Search › Search report

The settings are in the same menu under Quick Search settings. If recording is off, a warning with a "Switch it on" link appears at the top of the report.

2. Choose a tab

  • No results: terms customers search for and do not find. The most searched come first.
  • Most searched: the most frequently searched terms.
  • New this week: terms that were not seen before.
  • All: every recorded term.

The list shows the search term, the number of searches, the share without results, clicks on a suggestion and the last time it was searched.

3. Fix searches without results

Start on the No results tab and choose what to do for each row:

  1. Redirect: sends the customer from that term to a suitable page (a category, an information page). If you have the Search Redirects module, its editor opens.

  2. Synonym: opens Magento's synonyms page, where you connect the customer's word with the word you use in the catalog (for example "pants" and "trousers").

  3. The third option: add the product customers are looking for to the catalog, or rename an existing product or add the searched word to its description.

A frequently searched term with many clicks on a suggestion usually needs no action. More important than the number of searches is a term customers search for often and never find.
