Account creation and referral incentive

The moment right after a purchase is one of the best in the whole shopping journey: the customer is satisfied, excited about their choice, and trusts you most. This is the ideal time to deepen the relationship and gain new customers - with an invitation to a loyalty program or registration, and with a referral to friends. The only thing that matters is not to overwhelm the customer; the thank-you page should first confirm the purchase, and these offers should follow unobtrusively. Below is how to use this valuable moment without spoiling the experience.

An invitation to a loyalty program or registration

The thank-you page is an excellent place for an invitation to a loyalty program or to create an account. Since the customer has just made a purchase, you can offer them points or a benefit already for this order - which is far more convincing than an empty request to register.

Loyalty program sign-ups on the thank-you page usually work better than on the home or product page, since they address the customer at the moment they trust you most. Since the details are already entered at purchase, joining the program should be as simple as possible.

A referral to friends at the peak of enthusiasm

Right after a purchase, the customer is most willing to share their choice with friends and family. That is why referrals offered on the thank-you page bring a disproportionately large share of all referrals - according to data, around a third of referral revenue originates from this moment.

The referral call to action should be clearly visible and easy to use, ideally above the fold, since it has only a few seconds to grab attention. The customer should be able to share the invitation with one click, without complicated steps.

A double-sided reward

Referrals with a double-sided reward, where both sides get something - the existing customer for the referral and the new customer for their first purchase - work best. This model encourages sharing on one side and a purchase on the other, which is why the vast majority of successful programs use it.

The reward should be large enough to motivate, but not excessive. A moderate benefit, for example a discount or store credit for the next purchase, works better than overly high rewards, which do not significantly increase referrals but do increase the cost.

Watch for abuse and the timing of the reward

Rewards that trigger immediately can be abused, for example through returns or cancelled payments. So it makes sense to pay out or activate the reward only once the referred purchase is confirmed or the return window has passed.

Such a considered timing of the reward keeps the program fair and sustainable, while still offering the customer a clear benefit. The rules should be simple and transparent, so the customer knows when and how they receive the reward.

How to set it up in Magento

Magento does not have a developed loyalty or referral program by default, so a dedicated module is usually required for both features. Such a module shows an invitation to the program or a referral call to action on the thank-you page and takes care of tracking referrals, awarding rewards, and the rules.

When choosing, make sure the module supports double-sided rewards, control over the timing of payout, and measuring performance. That way you can adjust the program over time to what actually works with your customers.

How to measure whether it works

Track the share of customers who join the loyalty program or register after the purchase, and how many actually share a referral. With referrals, what matters is how many new customers come from them and what their value is - referred customers are usually more loyal and worth more than average.

Since these are long-term effects, you will not see them immediately in sales but in repeat purchases and the growth of your customer base. You can test different offers and rewards and keep those that bring the most sign-ups and referrals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why invite to registration or referral on the thank-you page?

The moment right after a purchase is one of the best in the whole journey: the customer is satisfied, excited about their choice, and trusts you most. This is the ideal time to deepen the relationship and gain new customers, with an invitation to a loyalty program or registration and a referral to friends. Sign-ups and referrals on the thank-you page usually work better than elsewhere, since they address the customer at the moment of greatest trust. The only thing that matters is not to overwhelm the customer and that these offers follow a clear purchase confirmation.

How do I prompt registration or loyalty?

Offer a concrete benefit, not an empty request: since the customer has just made a purchase, you can offer them points or a benefit already for this order. That is far more convincing than a generic "create an account". Loyalty sign-ups on the thank-you page work better than on the home or product page. The call should be clearly visible and easy to use, ideally above the fold, since it has only a few seconds to grab attention. What should the reward be?
