Additional offer on the thank-you page

A purchase does not end the relationship with the customer but rather begins it. The thank-you page is an excellent opportunity to gently invite the customer, who has just trusted you, to a next purchase - with a relevant add-on or a coupon for next time. Since the purchase is already made, such an offer does not threaten the sale but only builds on the customer's satisfaction. The only thing that matters is that it comes after the purchase confirmation and does not overwhelm the customer. Below is what kind of additional offer to place on the thank-you page so it increases customer value without spoiling the experience.

Complementary products

Suggestions of products that connect sensibly with what the customer has just bought work well on the thank-you page: a case with a phone, a filter with a coffee machine, a suitable conditioner with a shampoo. The best candidates are products that customers frequently buy together.

Since the add-on is related to the purchase already made, the customer often understands it as a useful suggestion rather than an ad. The more relevant the suggestion, the greater the chance the customer makes another purchase.

A coupon for the next purchase

A coupon for the next purchase is a strong incentive to return. A large share of customers return to a store that offered them a coupon at purchase, so the thank-you page is an excellent place to invite the customer back.

The coupon should be specific and, where possible, time-limited - "10% off your next purchase within 14 days" works better than a generic, permanent discount that creates no reason to return quickly. It makes sense for the coupon to apply only to the next purchase and for its value to be clear.

A subscription or upgrade, where it fits

For products that are used or renewed regularly, the thank-you page is a suitable place for a subscription or upgrade offer. A customer who is satisfied with the product is receptive to an offer to receive it regularly or in a better version.

Such an offer increases the customer's long-term value, but it only fits where it makes sense; for one-off purchases it is better to stick with a complementary suggestion or a coupon.

Less is more, and the right placement

An additional offer should never overshadow the main purpose of the thank-you page - confirming the purchase and reassuring the customer. The customer should first get all the order and delivery details, and only then, lower on the page, the additional offer.

There should be few suggestions, one or two, carefully chosen; too long a list confuses the customer, while a single good suggestion often works better than ten average ones. The goal is a useful offer, not intrusive pressure.

How to set it up in Magento

Magento by default allows showing related products and creating coupons through cart price rules, which you can also send in the confirmation email. You arrange the content of the thank-you page and the placement of the suggestions in the template of this page.

For something more elaborate, for example automatically chosen complementary suggestions, time-limited coupons tied to the order, or a subscription offer, a dedicated module is often required, one that adapts the offer to the order contents and takes care of the rules and measurement.

How to measure whether it works

Track the share of customers who accept the additional suggestion from the thank-you page, and the share of redeemed next-purchase coupons; with coupons, what matters is how many customers actually return and buy again.

Since this is mostly an effect on repeat purchases, it shows up mainly in the customer return rate and their long-term value. You can test different suggestions and coupons and keep those that bring the most returns and additional purchases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why put an additional offer on the thank-you page?

A purchase only begins the relationship with the customer; the thank-you page is an opportunity to gently invite a satisfied customer to a next purchase, with a relevant add-on or a coupon for next time. Since the purchase is already made, it does not threaten the sale but builds on the customer's satisfaction. The only thing that matters is that it comes after the confirmation and does not overwhelm the customer.

What kind of products should I suggest?

Suggestions that connect sensibly with what the customer has just bought: a case with a phone, a filter with a coffee machine, a conditioner with a shampoo. The best candidates are products that customers frequently buy together. Since the add-on is related to the purchase, the customer often understands it as a useful suggestion rather than an ad. The more relevant the suggestion, the greater the chance of an additional purchase.

How should I design a next-purchase coupon?

Specific and, where possible, time-limited: "10% off your next purchase within 14 days" works better than a generic, permanent discount that creates no reason to return quickly. A large share of customers who receive a coupon at purchase later return, so the thank-you page is an excellent place for such an invitation. It makes sense for the coupon to apply only to the next purchase and for its value to be clear.

How many offers and where?

Few, one or two, carefully chosen, and only below the order and delivery confirmation. The additional offer should never overshadow the main purpose of the thank-you page, confirming the purchase and reassuring the customer. Too long a list confuses the customer, while a single good suggestion often works better than ten average ones. The goal is a useful offer, not intrusive pressure.

How do I set it up in Magento and do I need a module?

Magento by default allows showing related products and creating coupons through cart price rules, which you can also send in the confirmation email; you arrange the content of the thank-you page and the placement of the suggestions in the template of this page. For something more elaborate, for example automatically chosen complementary suggestions, time-limited coupons tied to the order, or a subscription offer, a dedicated module is often required, one that adapts the offer to the order contents and takes care of the rules and measurement.
