Before you start

  • a product sold in packs, bags, cans, tonnes or pieces,
  • how much one unit covers or holds (for example 1.44 m² in a pack of tiles).

1. Switch the calculator on for the product

Catalog › Products › the product › Material calculator

Switch on Enable material calculator. In Calculation choose the mode: Area for tiles, flooring and paint, Volume and weight for gravel, sand and soil, Length for trim and cable.

2. Enter how much one unit covers

In One unit covers or holds enter the size of the unit you sell: 1.44 for a pack that covers 1.44 m², 25 for a 25 kg bag, 2.4 for a piece 2.4 m long. For volume also choose The unit is in (tonne, kg or m³) and Material if the density is always the same.

3. Waste and coats

Leave Waste (%) and Layers (coats) empty to use the general values. They are in Stores › Configuration › Magelan › Material calculator (10 % for area and 5 % for length by default).

4. Try it

Open the product page and press Calculate how much you need. Enter measurements and check that the quantity matches your own calculation.

For a product with several variants (tiles in two formats) set the fields on each variant. Empty fields of a variant are taken from the configurable product.

Common problems

The link is not on the product page

Check that the calculator is switched on for the product and in the general configuration, and that the product is simple, virtual or configurable. For a configurable product switch it on on the product or on the variants.

The link is grey and says to choose an option

On a configurable product the calculator waits until the shopper has chosen all the options. If it still does not work after choosing, the variant does not have the calculator switched on.

After the upgrade the calculator shows on every product

On upgrade from the old version Show on every product is switched on so that nothing changes. Switch it off once you have marked your products.
