Material calculator
The shopper enters the size of a room, a slab or a bed and learns how many packs, cans or tonnes to buy, waste included. One click sets the quantity on the product.

About the module
What it does.
"Customers e-mail us asking how much gravel they need for 20 square metres, and they order tiles by eye and then return them." A wrongly estimated quantity is one of the most common reasons for questions and returns in building materials.
What it looks like
The shopper opens a tile page and, below the format choice, presses "Calculate how much you need". He enters a 4 x 3.5 m room. The module adds 10 % waste, knows that a pack covers 1.44 m², and shows: "You need 11 packs, they cover 15.84 m², price about 132". One click sets the quantity to 11 and adds the product to the cart. For gravel they enter 8 x 3 m, 10 cm thick, and learn they need 3.84 t, so 4 t if you sell by the tonne.
What changes
- Three ways of calculating. Area (tiles, flooring, paint), volume and weight (gravel, sand, soil, cement) and length (trim, cable).
- Waste and coats. Waste in percent and the number of coats (two coats of paint), in general or per product.
- Rounded to the unit you sell. The shopper sees the measure needed and the quantity rounded up to a pack, a bag or a tonne. The quantity step, the minimum and maximum quantity and the stock are respected.
- The price of the product, not typed in. The shopper does not enter a price; the price on the page is used, also for the chosen variant.
- Rectangle, circle, several surfaces. Rooms are not always rectangular: up to five surfaces are added up, or they enter a number they already know.
- Product variants. For tiles in several formats, each variant has its own pack size.
- Luma and Hyvä. The window works with a keyboard and a screen reader and fills the screen on a phone. The calculation runs in the browser; no data goes to the server.
Who it is for
Stores selling tiles, flooring, laminate, paint, adhesives and building materials, where the shopper can hardly estimate the quantity himself.
How to set it up
On the product, in the Material calculator tab, switch the calculator on, choose the calculation and enter how much one unit covers (for example 1.44 m² per pack). The general waste, the input shapes and the material table with densities are in Stores › Configuration › Magelan › Material calculator. Set many products at once with the bulk attribute update. We can set the products up for you.
Good to know
- The calculator is an estimating aid: the result is a calculation from the shopper's measurements, not a guarantee of the quantity.
- In this version the calculation is not saved on the cart or order line; the cart holds a plain quantity.
- Existing users: on upgrade the old volume calculator stays on every product until you mark your products and switch that off.

How to install it.
You get the module from our private Composer repository; we send you the user name and access key after purchase. We can install it for you, or whoever looks after your store can run these commands in the root of the Magento 2 store (replace UPORABNIK and DOSTOPNI_KLJUC with the user name and access key you received):

After the purchase we send you the access key by e-mail. Keep it safe: for security it is shown only once and we do not keep it in readable form. The user name (your project code) and all the commands, ready to copy, are in your account under My account > Module licences.

Frequently asked questions
Questions we get most often.
Does the calculator work on all products?
No. You switch it on for the products that need it (tiles, paint, gravel). On the product, in the Material calculator tab, you switch the calculator on and enter how much one unit covers. When upgrading from the old version, the old calculator stays everywhere until you switch it off.
Does it work with tiles in several formats?
Yes. On a configurable product you set the pack size for each variant. Until the customer has chosen all options, the calculator asks them to choose a variant first.
Do you account for waste?
Yes. You set the waste percentage globally or per product (default 10 % for area). The customer sees the required quantity and the quantity including waste.
Does the customer enter a price?
No. It calculates with the product price the customer sees on the page, and the result is marked as approximate.
Is any data stored or sent to the server?
No. The calculation runs in the browser, with no cookies and no storage.
Is the measurement visible in the cart or the order?
Not in this version. The cart shows a plain quantity. Showing the measurement in the cart line is planned for later.
Does it work with a Hyvä theme?
Yes, Luma and Hyvä are supported.
