Cart discounts: cart price rules

A discount or free shipping that the cart applies by itself, for example 10 % off orders over 50 EUR.

A cart price rule adds a discount when the cart meets the conditions you set: a high enough amount, selected products or an entered coupon code. For example, you can offer:

  • 10 % off orders over 50 EUR,
  • free shipping on orders over 80 EUR,
  • 5 EUR off with a coupon code for newsletter subscribers,
  • every third product free.

Before you start

  • the name of the promotion and the period it runs for,
  • the type and size of the discount and the conditions (for example, the minimum order amount),
  • for a promotion with a code: the coupon code (see Discount coupons).

1. New rule

  1. At the top right, click Add New Rule.

Cart Price Rules page with the Add New Rule button
The button for a new rule is at the top right. Below it is a list of all rules, including inactive ones.
  2. In the Rule Information section, fill in the basic details:

    • Rule Name - a name only you see, for example Autumn discount 10 %,
    • Active - switched on,
    • Websites - your shop,
    • Customer Groups - the groups that get the discount. Hold down Ctrl to select several. For all visitors, also select NOT LOGGED IN (customers who are not signed in),
    • Coupon - No Coupon if the discount should apply automatically,
    • From and To - the promotion period. Empty means no limit.

    6. From - start of the promotion (To is just below it)

2. Conditions: when the discount applies

A rule without conditions applies to every cart. To add a condition:

  1. Expand the Conditions section and click the green + sign.

  2. Choose a condition from the list, for example Subtotal (Excl. Tax) for the cart value.

  3. Click the word is and choose equals or greater than. Then click the three dots, enter the amount (for example 50) and press Enter.

This is how you add a minimum cart value condition.
The subtotal is the value of the products in the cart without shipping. You can also base a condition on the number of items (Total Items Quantity), weight, shipping country, or selected products and categories (Product attribute combination). If the brand or another product detail is missing from the conditions, enable it as described in the article on catalog price rules.

3. Actions: what discount

  1. In the Actions section, choose the discount type in Apply:

Fixed amount discountan amount off each item2 EUR per item
Fixed amount discount for whole cartone amount off the whole cart5 EUR

  2. In Discount Amount, enter the number only: the percentage or the amount in EUR.

  3. For free shipping, in Free Shipping, choose For shipment with matching items. If the rule should only give free shipping, leave the discount amount at 0.

Actions section with the discount type and amount
    1. Apply - discount type.
    2. Discount Amount - percentage or amount.
    3. Discard subsequent rules - whether the discount can be combined with others.
    4. Free Shipping.
If Discard subsequent rules is switched on, the shop ignores all other rules after this one. This way two discounts are not combined. Which one comes first is set by Priority in the first section: the lower number comes first.

Several promotions at once: priority and exclusion

When two rules apply at the same time (for example, a seasonal promotion and a code for subscribers), the shop applies both and adds the discounts together. If you do not want that:

  • in the Rule Information section of the main promotion, enter Priority 1 (a lower number is applied first),
  • in the Actions section of the same promotion, switch on Discard subsequent rules; all rules with a higher priority number are then skipped,
  • give the other rules a higher priority number (2, 3 ...).

More detail, with examples for buy one get one free, quantity tiers, a coupon that does not apply to reduced products and a free gift with purchase: Advanced promotions.

Free shipping from a rule works with shipping methods that support it (flat rate, table rates). It does not work with some courier modules. After saving, check it in the cart.

4. Label for the customer and saving

  1. In the Labels section, enter how the discount is shown in the cart, for example Autumn discount. For the English shop, enter the translation next to English.

Labels section with the default label and labels for each language
    1. Default label for all languages
    2. Label for a specific language (optional)
  2. Click Save. The rule applies straight away.

  3. Check it in the shop: add products to the cart and look for the discount line below the amount.

Common problems

The discount does not show in the cart

Check that the rule is active, the right shop is selected, the From/To dates are valid and all customer groups are selected (including NOT LOGGED IN for customers who are not signed in). Then check that the cart really meets the conditions.

Two promotions are added together

On the rule with the higher priority (lower number), switch on Discard subsequent rules.

I want to end a promotion early

Switch off Active or set the To date. Do not delete the rule if you will use it again - you can simply switch it back on later.
