A discount the customer only gets by entering a code in the cart. One shared code for everyone, or a list of unique single-use codes.

A coupon is a cart price rule that only applies once the customer enters a code in the cart. First set up the rule as described in Cart discounts, then choose one of two options:

  • One code for everyone, for example AUTUMN10 to post on Facebook or in your newsletter.
  • Unique codes, for example 100 codes that each customer can use only once.

One code for everyone

Marketing › Promotions › Cart Price Rules

  1. Open a rule or add a new one. In the Rule Information section, in Coupon, choose Specific Coupon.

  2. In Coupon Code, enter the code, for example AUTUMN10. Upper and lower case do not matter.

  3. If you like, limit its use: Uses per Coupon is the total number of times the code can be used, Uses per Customer the number of uses for one signed-in customer. Empty means no limit.

Unique single-use codes

  1. In Coupon, choose Specific Coupon and tick Use Auto Generation. In Uses per Coupon, enter 1.

  2. Click Save and Continue Edit. You can only create codes once the rule is saved.

  3. Expand the Manage Coupon Codes section and fill in Coupon Qty (for example 100), Code Length and, if you like, Code Prefix (for example NEWS-).

    1. Coupon Qty
    2. Code Length - without prefix and suffix.
    3. Code Format - letters, numbers or both.
    4. Code Prefix
  4. Click Generate. The shop creates the codes in the background. After a minute or two, refresh the page and the codes appear in the list below the button.

  5. Download the list of codes with Export (CSV) at the top right of the list and use it in your newsletter or on printed coupons.

The code list shows for each code whether it has been used and how many times. This tells you how many customers actually used the coupon.

How the customer uses the code

In the cart or at checkout, the customer clicks Apply Discount Code, enters the code and confirms it. The discount appears in the order summary with the label you entered for the rule.

Common problems

The customer says the code does not work

Check that the rule is active and within its validity period, that the cart meets the conditions (for example, the minimum amount) and that the code has not already been used up (Uses per Coupon).

The Generate button is greyed out

The rule has not been saved yet, or Use Auto Generation is not ticked. Click Save and Continue Edit.
