Loyalty points

Shoppers earn points for paid orders and spend them as a discount at checkout; you set the rate, validity and one-off rewards, and see every customer's balance in the admin.

For every paid order, the shopper earns points (for example 3 % of the goods value) and can spend them as a discount at checkout on their next purchase. They can see their balance in their account on the My loyalty points page, and the product page says Earn 45 points with this product (€0.45). Points are credited when the invoice is paid, never when the order is placed.

Before you start

  • the rate (what percentage is returned), the base (including or excluding VAT) and the validity period,
  • written confirmation from your accountant that spending points is a rebate that reduces the tax base,
  • the customer groups that earn points; groups with a contractual discount should stay out.
Points that have been granted can't be taken back once the customer has spent them, and every change to the settings only applies from then on. Only switch on granting once the rate and groups are agreed.

1. Programme settings

Stores › Configuration › Magelan › Loyalty points

  1. In the Earning section, enter Return rate (%) and under Calculate the rate from choose Net goods value (excl. VAT) or Gross goods value (incl. VAT). The difference is 22 % (the Slovenian standard VAT rate), so tell your customers clearly which one you've chosen.

  2. Under Customer groups that earn points, select the groups; an empty list means nobody earns.

  3. Under Validity (days), enter the validity period (0 means points never expire). Under Hold new points for (days) you can enter 14: points can then only be spent after the withdrawal period, so a return can still reach them.

  4. If you like, enter one-off rewards for registering, an approved review, a newsletter signup and a birthday (the Points for registering field and the ones after it). A value of 0 switches the reward off.

  5. In the Redemption section, leave Points per 1 EUR at 100 (one point is one cent) and set Minimum balance to offer redemption and Most of the goods value points may cover (%); a value below 100 means the customer always pays at least part in money.

  6. Only at the very end, set Grant points on paid invoices to Yes and click Save Config.

2. What shoppers see

  • On the product page and in the cart: how many points the purchase will bring once it's paid.
  • At checkout: You have 1,250 points, the Points to use field and a Use 1,000 points (€10.00) button. The discount is a Loyalty points line and also reduces the VAT, like any discount. Points never cover shipping.
  • A guest without an account learns after the purchase that points are waiting if they create an account with the same email address (the Guests section).

You can also see a customer's balance at the bottom of their page in Customers › All Customers. A credit memo takes back the points for returned goods as long as they haven't been spent, and returns to the customer any points spent on that order; cancelling an order returns the spent points.

Common problems

A customer didn't get their points

The order doesn't have a paid invoice yet, the customer is in a group that doesn't earn points, or the order was placed as a guest. Check in History.

There's no points form at checkout

The customer isn't logged in, has fewer points than Minimum balance to offer redemption, or Allow redemption at checkout is set to No.
