Variants table: products with many variants

Set the search and filter that appear on a product with many variants, the row limit when adding to the cart and the variant limit above which the shopper gets the standard selector.

A product with 15 variants is easy to read in a table, a product with 150 is not. For larger numbers of variants the module therefore adds a search and a filter, and it limits the number of rows per request so that the request stays fast and reliable.

Before you start

  • the order table switched on,
  • a rough idea how many variants your largest products have (see the Configurations section of the product).

1. Search and filter

Stores › Configuration › Magelan › Shoe Size Guide

In the Order table group, Search from N variants sets from how many variants a search field and filter chips for the first attribute (for example size) appear above the table. The default is 20. The value 0 means never.

What the shopper has already typed stays when a filter hides the row. The total counts hidden rows too and tells the shopper how many selected rows are hidden at the moment.

With more than 40 variants the table shows the first 20 rows and a button to show the rest. This limit is built into the module and is not a setting.

2. Row limit when adding to the cart

Max rows per request sets how many rows one press of Add to cart may carry. The default is 100, the highest value allowed is 500. If the shopper fills in more rows, they get a message to add the rest in a second step. The field accepts only a number greater than zero.

3. Variant limit per product

Max variants per product sets up to how many variants a product gets the table. The default is 200, the highest value allowed is 1000. A product with more variants gets the standard selector instead of the table; the table is not split into pages.

4. Standard selector as a fallback

While the table is shown, the standard selector is hidden. If you set Keep standard selector to Yes, a link Use the standard selector appears under the table and shows the selector, and Back to the table returns to the table. This helps a shopper who wants to buy a single piece.

How to check a product

A command in the server console tells you which view a product gets and why, and how many variants it found:

bin/magento magelan:optiontable:check SKU

Add --store=ID for another store view. The command changes nothing.

Common problems

There is no search field although the product has many variants

Check Search from N variants: 0 turns the search off, and a higher value means the product has not reached that number yet.

A large product has the standard selector, not the table

The number of variants is above Max variants per product. Raise the limit (up to 1000) or keep the standard selector. The command magelan:optiontable:check shows the count and the limit.

The shopper gets a message about the maximum number of rows

The request has more filled rows than Max rows per request allows. You can raise the value up to 500.
