Configurable product (sizes, colours), a bundle of several products (Bundle Product) and a group of products (Grouped Product): when to use which and how to create it.

Besides the simple product, the shop has three more types that combine several products into one. The choice of type is permanent: you cannot change a product to a different type later.

TypeWhat the customer seesExample
Configurable Productone product with a choice of size or colour; each variant has its own stocka T-shirt in four sizes and three colours
Bundle Productone product made up of parts the customer can choose; the price is the sum of the partsa computer with a choice of monitor and keyboard; a gift set
Grouped Producta list of stand-alone products with quantities on one pagea set of pots and pans where the customer chooses how many of each
You choose the type with the arrow next to the Add Product button in Catalog › Products. We suggest we set up your first product of this kind together; you can then create the next ones yourself following the same pattern.

Configurable product (sizes, colours)

Before you start

  • an attribute for the variants (for example Size) with values, of the Dropdown type (see Product attributes and filters),
  • a price and stock quantity for each variant.
  1. Click the arrow next to Add Product and choose Configurable Product. Fill in the name, SKU, price and category as for a simple product.

  2. In the Configurations section, click Create Configurations.

The Configurations section with the Create Configurations button
Create Configurations opens a four-step wizard.
  3. The wizard takes you through four steps: Select Attributes (tick, for example, Size), Attribute Values (tick the values you have), a third step for images, prices and quantities (Apply single price to all SKUs or a price per value) and Summary. Click Next between steps and Generate Products at the end.

  4. A table of variants appears in the Configurations section. Here you can adjust the price, quantity or SKU of individual variants. Click Save.

Each variant is a separate simple product with the visibility Not Visible Individually. Later, you correct a variant's stock and price on that variant in Catalog › Products (find it in the list by SKU) or in the table in the Configurations section.

The category, description and images belong to the parent configurable product; you do not need to add them to the variants. Variants with an image per colour (a separate photo for each colour) are set up in the third step of the wizard or later on each variant.

Bundle (Bundle Product)

  1. Under Add Product, choose Bundle Product. For Price, leave the Dynamic Price switch on so the price is the sum of the selected parts, or switch it off and enter a fixed bundle price.

  2. In the Bundle Items section, click Add Option.

The Bundle Items section with the Add Option button
Each option is one part of the bundle (for example Monitor) in which the customer chooses between products.
  3. For the option, enter the Option Title (for example Monitor), choose the Input Type (Drop-down, Radio Buttons, Checkbox, Multiple Select) and whether it is Required. Click Add Products to Option and tick the products the customer can choose from.

  4. For each product, set the Default Quantity and whether the customer may change it (User Defined). Repeat for all parts of the bundle and save.

Under Ship Bundle Items you choose Together (one parcel) or Separately (each part as its own shipment). Stock is tracked on the individual parts, not on the bundle.

Grouped product (Grouped Product)

  1. Under Add Product, choose Grouped Product. A group has no price of its own; fill in the name, SKU, category, description and images.

  2. In the Grouped Products section, click Add Products to Group, tick the products and confirm.

The Grouped Products section with the Add Products to Group button
Products in the group remain stand-alone, and the customer chooses a quantity for each.
  3. For each product, enter the Default Quantity (it can be 0) and save.

On the group page, the customer sees all products with prices and a quantity field and adds them to the cart with one click. In the cart they appear as separate products.

Which to choose

  • The same product in several sizes or colours, with one image and description: configurable.
  • A set the customer puts together, with a combined price: bundle.
  • Several stand-alone products on one page that are often bought together: grouped.
  • A set with fixed contents and price (for example 3 of the same product for less): simplest as a simple product with its own SKU and stock.

Common problems

The configurable product shows Out of Stock in the shop

All variants are out of stock or disabled. The parent product is only in stock if at least one variant is.

Variants show up as separate products in the category

The variant has the visibility Catalog, Search. Set it to Not Visible Individually.

The bundle price is 0

With Dynamic Price, the price is the sum of the selected parts; check that the parts have prices and that at least one product is selected in each option.
