A rule is one attribute with its own parent category. Usually it is the brand, but you can add another rule, for example for a series or material.
When products are placed
- when a product is saved (the first product of a new brand creates its page),
- after a Magento product import (one run for all imported products),
- after a mass attribute update in the product grid,
- when the attribute is saved (renamed options rename their pages, deleted ones switch them off),
- every hour for products changed since the last run (also those an ERP writes straight to the database, as long as the update date changes).
The module writes only the differences and refreshes the product category and search indexes for the changed products. Categories outside the rules are left alone.
Running by hand and the log
Catalog › Brands › Brands
Above the grid are the buttons Dry run (shows what would change, saves nothing), Create missing categories (re-creates categories you deleted) and Sync now. The result opens in the log: how many categories were created, how many products were placed or removed, messages with an explanation and the categories before and after for each product, with a CSV export. A yellow notice above the grid tells how many brands need attention (a URL key collision or a deleted category) and when cron last ran.
Catalog › Brands › Sync log
The runs by source (product save, import, mass update, cron, command line, admin, wizard). Hourly runs without changes are not kept; the log is cleaned after 90 days (configurable).
Rule settings
Stores › Configuration › Magelan › Categories from an Attribute
The General group has the table of rules with an Edit link: parent categories (one per root category), automatic creation, showing in the brand list and on the product page, Minimum products (0 means a page for every option) and switching off automatic categories without products. Deleting a rule removes only its mappings; categories and product placements stay.
Command line
bin/magento magelan:attribute-category:sync --dry-run
bin/magento magelan:attribute-category:sync --attribute=manufacturer
bin/magento magelan:attribute-category:sync --create-missing
Running again is safe: it only completes what is missing and never duplicates categories.
