Automatic Sale (Outlet) category

A category that the store fills by itself with all discounted products. When a sale ends, the product drops out automatically.

Shoppers like to see what's on sale. Instead of adding products to and removing them from a Sale category by hand, the module fills it for you: every 15 minutes it checks which products have a price lower than the regular price and updates the category. Anything no longer discounted drops out.

Which products count as on sale

A product goes into the category when any of the following applies:

  • it has a special price that is currently valid,
  • it's discounted by a catalog price rule,
  • it has a tier price lower than the regular price, at any quantity,
  • it's a parent product (for example a T-shirt in several sizes) with at least one discounted variant.

The prices that count are those seen by shoppers who aren't logged in. A discount only for a customer group (for example for business partners) doesn't put a product on sale. Only enabled products that are visible in the catalogue go into the category.

1. Prepare the category

Catalog › Categories

  1. Create a category, for example Sale or Outlet, and enable it (see Categories and menu).

  2. In the Display Settings section, set Anchor to Yes and Display Mode to Products only.

  3. Don't add products by hand in the Products in Category section; the module removes manually added products that aren't discounted.

  4. Click Save. In the category tree there's a number next to the name, for example Sale (ID: 42). Make a note of it.

2. Switching it on

Stores › Configuration › Magelan › Sale Category

  1. At the top left, under the scope, choose the store view. Each language can have its own category, or both can point to the same one.

  2. In Default Sale category, enter the category number from the previous step. An empty field means it's switched off.

Sale category settings with the category number and the Populate Category button
    1. Default Sale category - category number (ID).
    2. Populate Category - fills it straight away.
  3. Click Save Config.

  4. The Populate Category button under Manual populate category fills the category straight away and shows how many products it added and removed. Otherwise this happens by itself within 15 minutes.

Then add the category to the menu or link a banner on the home page to it.

Common problems

A discounted product isn't in the category

Wait 15 minutes or click Populate Category. Check that the product is enabled and visible in the catalogue, and that the discount applies to shoppers who aren't logged in. For a special price, check the date range. If everything is fine, flush the cache.

The category is empty

The category number is wrong or entered for a different store view. Check the ID in the category tree and the scope of the setting.

A product whose sale has ended is still in the category

Prices from catalog price rules are refreshed once a day, overnight. The product drops out the next morning.
