Quantity discount ladder in the cart

On the product page and in the cart, shoppers see a bar with discount steps and a line like "Add 2 more products for a 6 % discount"; the module reads the steps from your cart price rules.

A quantity discount only works once shoppers know about it. Under the price on the product page, the module draws a bar, Buy more, pay less:, with steps (2 items 3 %, 3 items 6 %, 4 items 10 %). In the cart and mini cart it says Add 1 more compatible product and your discount grows to 6 %.; steps already reached are green, and at the top it says You have the biggest discount: 10 % along with the current saving in euros. The bar moves as soon as the shopper changes the quantity.

Before you start

  • a cart price rule for each step (see Cart discount and the Quantity steps section in Advanced promotions),
  • an attribute that tells which products count (for example Type = compatible, or a category).

How the module finds the steps

You don't enter the steps separately: the module reads them from your cart price rules, separately for each website and customer group. It only reads rules where it knows for certain what the shopper gets:

  • the rule is active, has no coupon, and Apply = Percent of product price discount,
  • in the Conditions section it has exactly one condition of the form If total quantity equals or greater than 3 for a subselection of items in cart matching ALL of these conditions: (the Products subselection option), and inside it one condition on a product attribute (for example Type is compatible, or Category),
  • all steps refer to the same products (the same attribute, the same values).
If another automatic percentage discount without a coupon applies to the same customer group (for example 10 % for regular customers), the ladder isn't shown, because the percentages would add up and no number would be true. Rules with a coupon and free gifts with purchase don't interfere with the ladder.

Settings

  1. In the General Configuration section, leave Enabled at Yes, Where The Steps Come From at From cart price rules, and Percent Shown as it is. The Entered by hand option is for special cases; if you need it, write to us.

General settings of the discount ladder
    1. Enabled
    2. Where The Steps Come From - usually from cart price rules.
    3. Percent Shown - leave it as it is.
  2. In the Where To Show It section, use Cart and Minicart and Product Page to choose where the ladder appears.

  3. Click Save Config.

The customer-facing texts talk about compatible products; if your ladder applies to a different group of products, tell us what they should be called.

Example with three steps

RuleCondition (subselection, Type is compatible)DiscountPriority
Compatible 10 %Quantity equals or greater than 410 %10, Discard subsequent rules
Compatible 6 %Quantity equals or greater than 36 %20, Discard subsequent rules
Compatible 3 %Quantity equals or greater than 23 %30

With two compatible products the shopper gets 3 %, and the ladder encourages them: Add 1 more compatible product and your discount grows to 6 %.

Common problems

The ladder doesn't appear

One of the rules isn't in the form described above (it has a coupon, an extra condition on the amount, or a fixed discount), or another automatic percentage discount applies to the group. Check the rules for the website and customer group you're viewing the store with.

The percentage on the ladder differs from the one in the rule

If Apply Discount On Prices is set to Including Tax in Stores › Configuration › Sales › Tax, the module multiplies the percentage from the rule by the tax rate, because that's what the shopper really saves. In such stores, the rules are entered with percentages divided by 1.22 (Slovenian standard VAT of 22 %).
