Translating products and categories with AI

When your store has several languages, product names and descriptions have to be entered for each language separately. The module does it for you: you tick products or categories in the list, choose a language, and within a few minutes the translator translates the texts in the background and saves them to the chosen store view. The formatting of descriptions (paragraphs, bold, lists) is kept; brand names, SKUs, dimensions and numbers aren't translated.

Before you start

a store view for the target language (for example Croatian),
access to the translation service, which we enter for you. Translation is paid by volume; a few hundred products cost only a few euros.

1. Settings

Stores › Configuration › Magelan › AI Translate

In the General Settings section, Enable Module should be Yes. We fill in the ChatGPT API Key field; leave Model as it is.
In Instructions you can give the translator directions in Slovenian, for example Don't translate brand names. Use gardening terminology. Address the customer formally.

In the Products section, switch on Enable Product Translation and under Translatable Product Attributes choose what gets translated: we recommend the product name (Product Name), description (Description), short description (Short Description) and meta title (Meta Title). The attribute names in this list are written as they are entered on the attributes. Hold Ctrl to select more than one.
In the Categories section, likewise switch on Enable Category Translation and under Translatable Category Attributes choose at least the name (Name) and description (Description).

Click Save Config. Leave the Queue Settings section as it is.

The URL key is never translated. The address of a product or category is the same in all languages, which prevents duplicate addresses and broken links.

2. Translate products

Catalog › Products

Tick the products using the checkboxes on the left. For many products, use a filter and then choose Select All in the drop-down next to the checkbox in the table header.
At the top left, open Actions › Translate and click the target language.

Confirm the prompt. A green message tells you how many products are in the queue. The translation is finished within a few minutes (about five products per minute).

3. Translate categories

The list shows all categories. The Located In column shows where the category sits in the tree, and the Already Translated In column shows which languages it already has a translation in. Tick the categories, open Actions › Translate and choose the language.

You can also translate a single category directly: open it in Catalog › Categories, choose the target store view under Scope, and at the top right click the arrow next to the Translate into "…" button. Choose This category only or This category and all subcategories.

How do I check the translation?

Open the product or category and choose the target store view under Scope. The fields show the translation; fix anything you don't like by hand and save. If you translate the same product again, the previous translation is overwritten. After translating category names, flush the cache so the new names appear in the menu.

Common problems

After 15 minutes there's still no translation

Check that the section for this type of content is switched on and that attributes are selected in it. If everything is fine, write to us: usually the credit with the translation service has run out.

There's no Translate into button on the category

Scope is set to All Store Views. Choose a specific language.

The category wasn't translated, but the products were

The category isn't under the root category of the target language, so the translation wouldn't be visible there. Write to us.
