Surcharge for cash on delivery

For a chosen payment method, the shop charges the customer a surcharge, fixed or as a percentage, and shows it in the cart, on the invoice and on the credit memo.

For a parcel with cash on delivery, the carrier charges an extra service fee. You can pass this cost on to the customer as a surcharge that is added only for the chosen payment method, most often cash on delivery. The customer sees it as a separate line in the totals, and the surcharge carries on into the order, invoice and credit memo.

1. Settings

Stores › Configuration › Magelan › Payment surcharge › Surcharge per payment method

  1. If you have several languages or countries, choose the store view in the scope switcher at the top left. The surcharge can be different in each one.

  2. Set Enabled to Yes. It is switched off at installation, so that no surcharge is charged without you knowing.

Surcharge per payment method settings with the Label and Rules fields
    1. Enabled - Yes switches the surcharge on.
    2. Label - the text the customer sees in the totals.
    3. Rules - one line per payment method: method code, vertical bar, amount.
  3. In Label, enter what the customer should see in the totals, for example Cash on delivery fee or COD surcharge.

  4. In Rules there is one line for each payment method: the payment method code, a vertical bar and the amount. We enter the payment method codes during installation; you only change the amount after the bar.

  5. Click Save Config.

Example lineWhat it means
cashondelivery|0.98a surcharge of EUR 0.98 for cash on delivery
cashondelivery|2%a surcharge of 2 % of the product value (without shipping)
You can write the amount with a comma or a full stop (0,98 and 0.98 are the same). A negative value is ignored, so you cannot use the surcharge as a discount. The amount is charged exactly as entered and includes VAT.

2. Where the surcharge appears

  • in the cart and at checkout, as soon as the customer chooses a payment method from the rules,
  • in the order confirmation email and in the customer's order view,
  • in the admin on the order, on the invoice and its PDF,
  • on the credit memo, where it is refunded to the customer along with the rest of the amount.

If the customer switches payment method at checkout, the surcharge disappears or is recalculated. If an order is invoiced in parts, the surcharge is charged only once, on the first invoice.

If your carrier charges cash on delivery on a scale (for example more for higher amounts), enter the percentage that best covers the average. The setting does not support scales by amount.

Common problems

The surcharge is not in the cart

The surcharge only appears once a payment method has been chosen. Check that Enabled is set to Yes for the right store view and that the line in the rules contains a vertical bar and an amount.

The surcharge is wrong in another country

The rules are set per store view. Switch to the other country's store view at the top and check the value there.

I would like a surcharge for a new payment method

Write to us and tell us which one. We add a line with the method code, and you then edit the amount yourself.
