Cash on delivery only up to a set weight

For heavy orders, the shop hides cash on delivery and the customer chooses a different payment method.

Carriers charge more for a parcel with cash on delivery, and for very heavy parcels they do not accept it at all. This setting makes sure that when an order is over a set weight, the customer does not see cash on delivery at checkout and has to choose a different payment method. The weight is the sum of the product weights in the cart, multiplied by the quantity.

Before you start

  • weights entered on your products (products without a weight are not counted),
  • the limit you have agreed with your carrier.

Settings

Stores › Configuration › Magelan › COD Weight Restriction › General Settings

  1. Set Enable COD Weight Restriction to Yes.

    1. Enable COD Weight Restriction - Yes.
    2. Maximum Weight (kg) - above this limit there is no cash on delivery.
    3. Weight Unit - must match the weights on your products.
    4. Error Message - the customer does not see it at checkout.
  2. In Maximum Weight (kg), enter the limit. An order heavier than this no longer offers cash on delivery.

  3. Leave Weight Unit (Kilograms (kg), Grams (g) or Pounds (lbs)) as we set it during installation. It must match the unit your product weights are entered in; if you change it, the limit is converted wrongly.

  4. You can leave the Error Message field as it is. The customer does not see this message at checkout; the payment method is simply not offered.

  5. Click Save Config.

What the customer sees

While the cart is under the limit, cash on delivery is one of the payment methods. Once it goes over, this option disappears and the other payment methods stay. The customer gets no warning, so it is a good idea to mention the limit in your delivery terms.

If you want to exclude cash on delivery only for certain products (for example made-to-order goods), whatever their weight, write to us. We have a separate product setting for that.

Common problems

Cash on delivery is still offered for a heavy order

Check that the products in the cart have a weight entered. A product without a weight counts as zero. Also check that the setting is switched on for the right store view.

Cash on delivery disappears even for light orders

The weight unit does not match the product weights (for example, weights in grams but the limit in kilograms). Do not change this yourself; write to us.
